Hamilton will surely continue to be one of the most popular Broadway shows in August. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s production tells the life story of Alexander Hamilton, one of the US’s Founding Fathers. Conducted almost entirely through hip hop and rap music, the story is compelling and brilliantly delivered. Although the source material may seem stuffy and intellectual, Hamilton delivers it with energy and aplomb. Alexander Hamilton lives an eventful life and his trials and tribulations loom large on the Broadway stage. August is the perfect time to catch the wonderful Hamilton as it continues its summer run.

School of Rock – The Musical

After the resounding success of the School of Rock film, which starred comedian Jack Black, the story is now onstage. It’s a funny musical romp that will keep kids and adults entertained with its talented cast of all ages. The musical follows Dewey Finn, a not-quite rock star who starts teaching in an uptight prep school. The class of children he’s teaching are musically talented but they only play classical pieces. Can Dewey whip them into shape to compete as a rock act in Battle of the Bands? The show combines a heart-warming redemption story with funny, age-appropriate jokes and great music. School of Rock – The Musical is one of the best family friendly Broadway shows in August.

Dear Evan Hansen

Anyone who has ever felt left out will sympathize with the main character of Dear Evan Hansen. Evan is a shy, socially anxious high schooler who struggles to fit in. He’s so unpopular, in fact, that no one will even sign his cast when he breaks his arm. However, when a tragedy and a simple mistake occur together, Evan is suddenly the center of attention. He takes this opportunity at popularity and runs with it, with poignant and hilarious consequences. Dear Evan Hansen is a touching but humorous musical that is roundly adored by audiences.

The Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is one of the crudest Broadway shows in August, or perhaps of all time! The musical is written by the creators of South Park, which should tell you a something about its comedic style. Although the show is irreverent, it is also a huge critical and box office success. The show follows two Mormon missionaries who go to Uganda but have trouble converting the locals to their religion. It seems that there are much more pressing issues affecting the native people! The Book of Mormon combines racy jokes with catchy musical numbers to create a memorable production.

What happened before Dorothy arrived in Oz to find the wizard? Wicked is the smash hit musical that explores the story before The Wizard of Oz begins. The main characters are two friends who later become Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West. They share a rivalry over their shared love interest and begin to fall apart due to their differing beliefs. Wicked paints the relationship poignantly so that audiences are immediately gripped by the tale. Additionally, the show provides some fantastic songs to create an unforgettable theater experience.

The Lion King

The thrilling show follows Simba, a lion cub who flees his home after his father dies. The show charts his maturation and return to the pride lands when they are threatened. Combined with the rousing score, the show becomes something that will captivate adults and children of all ages.

Kinky Boots

Kinky Boots is a Broadway favorite with music by eighties pop icon Cyndi Lauper. Together with choreography from Tony Award winners Harvey Fierstein and Jerry Mitchell, the show becomes something really special. It tells the story of Charlie Price, a young man running his family’s shoemaking factory. The business is struggling and it seems like it might shut down completely. However, the arrival of bawdy drag queen Lola changes all that. Lola suggests that Charlie should start making stilettos for men, a gap in the market which she wants to fill. With bright musical numbers alongside the stark factory setting, Kinky Boots is a fantastic study in opposites. It is certainly one of the most lovable Broadway shows in August.
