The Glass Menagerie

The Glass Menagerie is closing in July 2018 so get your hands on tickets while you still can! This stunning Tennessee Williams memory play is an exploration of family, love, and hidden heartache. The show is told from the viewpoint of Tom, a man looking back on his family life with his mother and sister. On one evening in particular, the family come together with one of Tom’s friends, a potential suitor for his sister. Their interactions are fraught and compelling to watch, creating a fantastic piece of theater. The Glass Menagerie is Tennessee Williams at his best and this Broadway staging really does the story justice. Of all the Broadway shows in July, The Glass Menagerie is one that you should not miss.

Six Degrees of Separation

This classic piece is also closing in July and it’s well worth a watch before the last curtain falls. The Pulitzer Prize winning play by John Guare is an incisive indictment of class and race relations in America. The story previously won an Academy Award in its film adaptation but now it’s back onstage. Six Degrees of Separation follows a rich New York couple, Flan and Ouisa Kitteridge, who make their money as art dealers. A young con artist turns up, claiming that he knows their children and that he’s the son of Sidney Poitier. The Kitteridges willingly take him in, and the show begins to explore the ramifications of their easy trust. Starring Allison Janney and John Benjamin Hickey, this production is one of the most compelling Broadway shows in July.

The Book of Mormon

Created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of television’s South Park, The Book of Mormon is a must-see. It even contains music co-created by Robert Lopez, the musical mastermind behind Avenue Q. Rauncy and wild, The Book of Mormon is the most irreverent Broadway show in July. It follows awkward Elder Cunningham and narcissistic Elder Price, two young Mormon missionaries. They find themselves in Uganda attempting to convert the local people to Mormonism. However, they are immediately completely out of their depth, and hilarious consequences ensue. If you are sensitive to risqué humor then you won’t enjoy The Book of Mormon and its frequently profane comedy. However, thick-skinned theater goers will laugh until they cry at this hilarious musical.

Related to the Wizard of Oz, Wicked tells the story of what happened before Dorothy arrives. The two main characters, Elphaba and Galinda, are young friends who share a healthy but growing rivalry. Wicked explains how they became The Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch. Of all the Broadway shows in July, Wicked remains one of the best. The Lion King

The Lion King has been a wild but lovable success story for Disney since its animated film release. However, it has really made its home on the Broadway stage. The Lion King is one of the most visually appealing Broadway shows in July. What’s more, it is thankfully child and adult friendly, so audiences of all ages can enjoy the action. The story follows Simba, an orphaned lion cub who leaves the pride land after his father’s death. He grows up with the help of some hilarious animal friends, and then discovers that his old home is endangered. Simba must truly mature to take control and win back the safety of the pride land against evil forces. The Lion King perfectly combines magnificent costumes and stunning choreography with familiar, rousing music.

Aladdin is another Disney animation getting the Broadway treatment. Similarly, it offers some fantastic visuals, including an unforgettable magic carpet ride scene around the theater.
