Broadway Shows in November – Reviews
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s box office hit remains on the roster of Broadway shows in November 2017. Critics and audiences love Hamilton, a historical musical with a thoroughly modern twist. Telling the story of the Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, the musical depicts his chaotic life and rivalry with Aaron Burr. Interestingly, the story is told almost entirely through rap and hip hop music. Although Hamilton is a show about US history, there’s nothing old or stale about it! Broadway fans will adore this savvy musical production.
Dear Evan Hansen
Dear Evan Hansen seems to be designed specifically to tug on the audience’s heartstrings. Somehow, though, it also contains many humorous moments while navigating its dark subject matter. The musical follows the titular Evan Hansen, a high school student who can’t seem to catch a break. He is painfully unpopular and suffers from social anxiety. However, Evan’s life changes suddenly when a mix up leads to him getting involved in another family’s tragedy. This excellent production offers a touching storyline, rousing musical numbers, and a talented cast of actors and singers.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
Carole King is a music legend involved in many riotously popular songs like “Natural Woman” and “You’ve Got A Friend”. Now, her story comes to life onstage in the moving tribute Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. It charts her early days in Brooklyn as a pregnant teenager with an older husband and her rise to fame. The show is sensitive and candid, offering a real insight into the songwriter’s life that music fans will greatly appreciate. These scenes from King’s life are interspersed with fantastic renditions of some of her most popular songs. Indeed, Beautiful is one of the best musical Broadway shows in November 2017.
Come From Away
Come From Away takes deeply sensitive subject matter and crafts it into the most compelling Broadway shows in November 2017. Set in Gander, Newfoundland, the show is based on a powerful true story. On September 11th 2001, 38 planes were diverted to Gander’s air strip, bringing thousands of international travelers with them. The people of Gander welcomed these strangers with open arms, offering them a temporary home away from home. The story is touching, offering real insight into what a global family really looks like. Whether you were familiar with the story before or not, you’ll find something to love in this touching production.
School of Rock – The Musical
School of Rock was tremendously popular as a film starring Jack Black. Now, it has successfully made the often tricky leap to Broadway. School of Rock follows Dewey Finn, a seemingly hopeless wannabe rocker who ends up teaching at a prep school. Dewey is lovable, both full of energy and awfully lazy, but he forms an unlikely bond with the uptight students. He wants to adapt their classical music talents to create a winning rock group for Battle of the Bands. While the class learn to adapt to this new way of playing and thinking, Dewey begins to change too. The musical is rocking, rolling, and great fun for all the family.
The Lion King
Everyone loves Disney’s The Lion King. Like School of Rock, this big cat tale has made a successful move from screen to the Broadway stage. The performers use excellent costuming and clever puppetry to create a visually satisfying show, combining it with an energetic score. When young lion cub Simba’s father is killed, he flees his pride to escape the pain. He then meets Timon and Pumba, a hilarious meerkat and warthog duo, and begins to mature and grow into himself. When his homeland is threatened, however, Simba has to return and protect it from the evil that slayed his father. The story is painted beautifully onstage, making it one of the most impactful Broadway shows in November 2017.
Kinky Boots is a moving tale about coming to terms with yourself and learning to accept the people around you. However, it’s not all schmaltz. The booming musical contains a score from music legend Cyndi Lauper and the performers are energetic and lovable. The show follows Charlie Price, a young man struggling to keep his family shoemaking business afloat. That is, until boisterous drag queen Lola arrives on the factory floor. Lola and Charlie have to work through their differences to unite, and it’s only then that business begins to thrive. The show is truly unique amongst Broadway shows in November 2017. Most of all, Kinky Boots is funny, endearing, and bright.
A Bronx Tale
A Bronx Tale shows off New York more than any other Broadway show in November 2017. Previously successful as a book, solo stage play, and a film, the story now makes its home on Broadway. It is a loosely autobiographical account of Chazz Palminteri’s life growing up in an Italian-American Bronx neighborhood. After he witnesses a shooting, the main character begins to pull apart from his family. As he grows up, he must decide whether to stick with his roots or find success as a mob boss. The tricky subject matter is brought to life by a fantastic score of doo-wop music. Anyone who wants to experience a timeless New York tale will be enthralled by this classic musical.
Broadway always brings entertainment to the next level and this November is no exception. Indeed, these performances are truly Broadway at its best. Take the time to catch one of these fabulous shows before they leave the stage and you won’t be disappointed
