Sunset Boulevard

Starring: Glenn Close

Glenn Close earned a Tony Award for Best Actress for her performance in this sparkling Andrew Lloyd Webber production. She plays Norma Desmond, a fading Hollywood star clinging to the memories of her past. Meanwhile, a 40-piece orchestra accompany the highs and lows of this captivating story. The show received glowing reviews during its time in London’s West End and it promises to be an exciting romp. In fact, Sunset Boulevard sold out on the West End before it hit Broadway, so it’s a show you don’t want to miss.

The Great Comet

Starring: Josh Groban

The Great Comet is based on Tolstoy’s literary masterpiece War and Peace, so it’s a great option if you’re a fan of highbrow shows. The show chronicles a young girl, Natasha, who begins to fall in love with a bad boy while her betrothed lover, Andrey, is fighting in the war. Josh Groban plays Pierre, Andrey’s best friend, who watches suspiciously as the romance develops. If you’re a fan of Broadway shows and Josh Groban’s soaring vocals, then you should certainly get your hands on tickets for The Great Comet. The New York Times even described it as “the best new musical to open on Broadway since Hamilton”!

Chicago

Starring: Mel B

If you enjoyed watching Mel B belting out the hits as one-fifth of the Spice Girls or judging with an iron fist on America’s Got Talent, then you’ll certainly love her in this Broadway production of Chicago. She stars as the main character, Roxie Hart, a 1920s chorus girl who finds herself locked up in Cook County Jail after murdering her lover. Roxie manages to turn herself into a media star with the help of a slick lawyer and savvy nightclub singer Velma. But is she as innocent as she seems? This Tony-winning musical will wow Mel B fans and lovers of 1920s glitz and glamour!

War Paint

Starring: Patti LuPone

Many media fans will know Patti LuPone from her roles in Driving Miss Daisy and Penny Dreadful. Nevertheless, she’s a hugely successful stage actress with several Tony awards under her belt. She’s currently starring in War Paint, the true story of original female entrepreneurs Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. These women created the cosmetics industry in America and their fierce competition allowed them to build international business empires before women were even allowed to vote. War Paint is an uplifting and fascinating musical that any Broadway fan should make sure to see.

The Present

Starring: Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett makes her spectacular Broadway debut in this intense adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s Platonov. The story follows Anna, a strong-minded widow played by Blanchett, as she celebrates her birthday in a secluded country house. The attending friends get along on the surface but tension bubbles underneath as viewers discover the tangle of messy relationships and hidden desires that the partygoers share. Although you might not enjoy The Present if you’re a fan of light-hearted stage shows, it has been warmly reviewed and it’s a great choice if you like your Broadway a little darker.

The Little Foxes

Starring: Laura Linney and Cynthia Nixon

Celebrities on Broadway – the Little Foxes stars two famous female celebs in the same stage show! Sex And The City’s Cynthia Nixon and The Big C’s Laura Linney switch roles in this well-reviewed production, alternating as the two main characters in this legendary play. They star as Regina and Birdie, sisters in law who ruthlessly hash out the deal of a lifetime in 1900s Alabama. This emotionally rich production is excellently directed by Daniel Sullivan, who puts greed, longing, and ambition center stage. Consequently, the viewers to watch Linney and Nixon perform like never before, so it’s a must-see if you’re a fan of these seasoned and multi-talented actresses.

Present Laughter

Starring: Kevin Kline

Kevin Kline has been a star since the 1980s but he’s still winning fans on Broadway in Present Laughter, a tight production of Noël Coward’s classic comedy. Kline easily draws giggles and belly laughs in his role as Garry Essendine, a pleasure-seeking and somewhat self-obsessed actor who is visited by a series of guests including a youthful admirer, his manager, his bitter ex-wife, and an aspiring playwright. Frequently described a comedy classic, Present Laughter is well worth a watch if you like dark humor and spectacular stage acting.

The End of Longing

Starring: Matthew Perry

Friends star Matthew Perry has had a tumultuous life since the famous sitcom finished airing. In fact, he’s been surprisingly open about his struggles with drugs and alcohol. While Perry has performed on Broadway before, starring in David Mamet’s Sexual Perversity in Chicago, this is his first time writing and acting in a stage show. He penned The End of Longing himself and plays the lead role as an alcoholic photographer who winds up in a bar with his escort girlfriend, a self-diagnosed neurotic, and a lovable idiot. Laughs abound as the four struggle to come to terms with middle-age, making this a great show to watch if you’ve experienced the aging process yourself!

Of course, with this many Broadway shows starring celebs on stage, you’re spoiled for choice. Live shows are always an exciting experience but seeing a big name actor or singer certainly takes it to the next level.
