Current Broadway Shows NYC – Reviews

In Transit

In Transit is one of the best current Broadway shows for people who love New York. The show is based in the Big Apple and perfectly captures the essence of New York City. The cast of lovable characters includes an aspiring actress, a cab driver, and a successful Wall Street big shot. These characters, and several more, navigate their way through New York’s streets and subways to a soundtrack of stimulating music. In Transit is one of the many fantastic musicals currently on Broadway.

The Glass Menagerie

The Glass Menagerie is a classic memory play by Tennessee Williams that has returned to Broadway this season. The show follows five key characters who interact tensely with one another. The play is compellingly delivered from the point of view of one character who reflects on life with his family. The show builds to its conclusion through a series of gripping reactions. It is certainly one of the most riveting current Broadway shows.

The Book of Mormon

Fans of irreverent comedy will laugh their socks off at The Book of Mormon. The show comes from the creators of television’s witty, adult-oriented South Park. The Book of Mormon is a similarly naughty affair. It follows two young Mormon missionaries who travel to Uganda to attempt to convert the locals. However, they realize once they arrive that it’s not going to be that easy. The Book of Mormon is one of the funniest and most critically acclaimed shows currently on Broadway.

Sunset Boulevard

Sunset Boulevard stars Glenn Close and a host of other fantastic actors. Close plays Norma Desmond, an old Hollywood star who has faded into obscurity. Norma spends her days reading fan mail and hoping to become famous once again. Her creepy servant adds a touch of darkness to the play that balances it wonderfully. Sunset Boulevard is an excellent musical that perfectly complements the schedule of current Broadway shows.

Wicked is one of the most popular current Broadway shows and it is well worth a watch. It’s a rousing musical which focuses on two young witches in the world of The Wizard of Oz. They struggle to come to terms with their differing points of view and compete over a mutual love interest. Eventually, they go on to become Oz’s Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West. If you like powerful music and strong characterization, you’ll adore Wicked.

Dear Evan Hansen

Of all the current Broadway shows, Dear Evan Hansen is one of the most recent and best loved. The show concerns a socially anxious high school student, the unpopular Evan Hansen. At the behest of his therapist, Evan writes a positive letter to himself before the new year of school begins. When that letter falls into the wrong hands, Evan is propelled into a lie and a sudden burst of popularity. The show is excellent Broadway fare, a touching but funny production with wonderful musical numbers throughout.

Hamilton is without a doubt one of the most prominent current Broadway shows. Created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical tells the life story of Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton was one of the US’s Founding Fathers and arguably one of history’s most fascinating figures. The show enlists talented actors to tell his story through a score of rap and hip hop music. While Hamilton is an old story, it certainly isn’t old fashioned! Broadway fans will adore this absorbing and excellently produced musical.

Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812

Based on Tolstoy’s War and Peace, this current Broadway show is an exciting production. Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 is a story about love, war, and loyalty. It follows Natasha, a young woman who begins to get involved with a rebellious man. However, she already has a betrothed lover who is away in the war. His best friend, played by Josh Groban in this production, keeps a suspicious eye on the developing relationship. The show combines a rich storyline with diverse musical numbers.

Waitress is the most thoroughly sweet current Broadway show. The musical follows Jenna, a pregnant diner waitress stuck in a miserable relationship. Her partner is a demanding, lazy slob and Jenna is troubled by the prospect of having a child with him. However, when a new face comes on the scene, it seems like she may find a happy ending after all. With a score by singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, this lovely musical will keep you enthralled until the last moment.

A Bronx Tale

A Bronx Tale is one of the smoothest current Broadway shows. Based on Chazz Palminteri’s 1993 book, the show is a funky doo-wop musical with a dark story at its heart. When the young main character witnesses a shooting, he decides not to reveal the perpetrator to the police. This leads him into an adult struggle between staying loyal to his family and rising to success in the mob. The show is a must-see for fans of compelling musical theater.
