A Doll’s House: Part 2 on Broadway – Review
Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House was written in 1879 and continues to be studied in schools, universities, and theater companies to this day. In A Doll’s House, the protagonist Nora Helmer is summarily humiliated and betrayed by her family. The play attracted huge controversy at the time of its release. Of course, at the time, it was almost unheard of for a women to leave her husband and children in order to find herself. But that’s what Nora Helmer did, and it is out of these circumstances that A Doll’s House, Part 2 arises.
Lucas Hnath wrote this long-awaited sequel, one that dramatists have discussed for over a hundred years. In this astute follow-up, Nora returns to the household after a period of many years away from her family. With frayed tempers and the passage of time standing between her and her loved ones, how will they react? A Doll’s House, Part 2 explores these complex and heart-wrenching problems with a reverence to Ibsen’s original play. The struggle between independence and reunion is enduring.
Broadway is the perfect setting for this sequel, given that A Doll’s House has proven to be an enduringly adored stage production. It is a loving tribute, but has also been described as standing on its own merit too. Moreover, the play is apparently so compelling that it was picked up purely on the strength of its script. A Doll’s House, Part 2 looks like it could be a formidable Tony Award contender this season, and a must-see too. Fans of Ibsen’s original work and theater novices will find something to love in this exciting and much anticipated production.
