Groundhog Day The Musical – Review

Groundhog Day has been an enduring success since its film release in 1993. The hilarious fantasy-comedy starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell has now finally made its way to Broadway! What’s more, this version of the iconic storyline includes musical interludes. The production was promising from the start, lifted up by a fabulous creative cast. Danny Rubin, the writer of the original film, acts as the show’s scriptwriter, and the creative team behind Matilda collaborated to bring Groundhog Day to life on stage. Furthermore, music and lyrics are offered by talented pianist and comedian Tim Minchin. The inclusion of music is a boon to this production, giving Groundhog Day an upbeat twist that helps it fit in on the Broadway stage.

The storyline follows a self-obsessed, manipulative, and moody weatherman, Phil Connors, who reluctantly visits a small town for a news story. In the provincial town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Groundhog Day is a big deal. The appearance of the groundhog predicts the start of spring, and Connors grudgingly films the report and prepares himself to leave the town. That’s when time begins to loop, and he finds himself reliving Groundhog Day again, and again, and again.

Andy Karl brings new life to Bill Murray’s character and delivers the acerbic and clever songs with easy charm. The stage revolves and reflects the ongoing repeat of the same, dull day in a visually impactful manner. Coupled with Minchin’s anarchic and musically diverse score (there are hints of bluegrass, rock, and almost pop influences), Groundhog Day makes a thrilling leap from screen to stage. Fans of the original film, avid theater goers, and comedy aficionados will all enjoy this excellent Broadway turn.
