In Transit Broadway – Review

In Transit is a bouncy, bounding, and hearty musical that follows a group of subway passengers in New York City. In the wake of successful television shows like Glee and films like Pitch Perfect, the musical is entirely a cappella. Not a single instrument plays aside from the pure and impressive voices of the cast. In fact, the show’s a cappella producer, Deke Sharon, previously worked on the highly successful Pitch Perfect films. Combined with the writing and production expertise of Kristen Anderson-Lopez, James-Allen Ford, and others, In Transit is an exciting performance.

The show tails a group of New Yorkers as they navigate around the city. There are certainly some familiar characters in the production, but they feel fresh and interesting. A young woman is stuck working a day job while she waits for her acting career to take off. A gay couple struggle to deal with the prejudices of one of their hyper-religious mothers. A musician offers words of advice in between performances. It is easy to stay engaged in their stories.

At its heart, In Transit is about tackling conflict and getting through life. The show explores the ways in which harried people can get along when they take a little time to empathize. The story that unfolds onstage will enrapture anyone who loves New York City, or even just the idea of it. For that reason, it’s the perfect show to see if you’re visiting the Big Apple. However, you’ll find even more to love about In Transit if you’re a New Yorker who’s appreciates your city. The show is gloriously upbeat even in its less joyous moments. As the music reaches new heights, In Transit will inevitably put a smile on your face.
