The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe – Review

The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is another excellent example of a beloved novel that is perfectly at home on the page, stage, and screen. Written by C.S. Lewis for the Chronicles of Narnia series and first published in 1950, the fantasy tale was later adapted for cinema screens in 2005. However, this New York stage production offers a little more wonder and excitement as the fantastical land of Narnia is unveiled right before the audience’s eyes. Directed by Julia Beardsley O’Brien, this run of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe offers just enough drama and humor to keep both children and adults captivated for its tight and time-conscious duration.

The story follows the Pevensie siblings who are sent to live in the countryside during World War II, where they find a home with the eccentric Professor Kirke. Lucy, one of the children, stumbles through an enormous wardrobe one day and finds herself in the magical, snow-capped land of Narnia. Once there, a faun named Tumnus explains to her that an evil witch has cast a spell on Narnia so that it is always winter. Lucy returns through the wardrobe and brings the rest of her siblings to Narnia, intent on saving the magical land from the witch’s clutches.

The four siblings are imaginatively played by only two actors in this compact production. Surprisingly, through the use of clever costuming and staging effects, the two actors manage to portray a whole cast of characters effectively, without ever taking away from the drama of the storyline. This version of the beloved tale is short enough to keep younger children engaged while still fleshing out the story for older audiences. Indeed, this off-Broadway turn is the perfect piece of nostalgic theater for both adults and children.
