Not That Jewish Show – Review

Monica Piper created Not That Jewish and she is also its solo star. Piper is a talented writer with several award wins and nominations under her belt for her work on television. She has written for Roseanne, Mad About You, and Rugrats, amongst others, and Not That Jewish brings her brand of savvy comedy to the stage. This autobiographical show is funny and touching, offering an intimate experience to its audience. Piper recounts her experience as a Jew-ish woman, offering humorous and moving anecdotes relating to her religion or lack thereof.

The subject matter of Not That Jewish is well-connected but wide ranging. Piper grew up in the Bronx in a showbiz family and later ended up marrying into a WASP-y family. She discusses life as a single mother in a candid and relatable manner. Piper is particularly charming when discussing her father, who was a huge influence on her sense of humor and later comedy career. From hysterical anecdotes to touching narratives about her divorce and her parents’ ageing, Not That Jewish is a testament to Piper’s fantastic talent for storytelling.

Theater goers who enjoy stand-up comedy, memoir-based theater, and good storytelling will adore Not That Jewish. Similarly, anyone who grew up in a religious family and has felt the effects of faith on their life will relate to Piper’s tales. Not That Jewish is remarkable for its ability to connect the audience with the performer quickly and naturally, which creates a wonderfully engrossing atmosphere. Ninety minutes will fly past as Piper holds the audience in the palm of her hand with her well-crafted and often hilarious stories. The happy, the hysterical, and the sad are perfectly balanced in this engaging one-woman-show.
