On Your Feet! is a fairytale about two young Cuban American lovers with a dream of becoming musical superstars…and the dream that came true! Emilio had big plan and Gloria had an even bigger voice, and between the two them they created an entertainment empire that captured first Miami and then the entire world. The story of Gloria and Emilio Estefan will tempt you to leap to your feet from the first few beats and notes, but try to restrain yourself, because you will be rocked by story and song for more than two hours.

The Creation

They took America by storm with their music and their obvious love for one another. Gloria came to America when she was only two years old but, as she says, her mother never let her get far away from Cuban culture, from food to music. She met a handsome young man who was the bandleader for the Miami Latin Boys. She was still a teenager, but Emilio Estefan immediately was taken by her voice and asked her to join the band. It was in this band she learned the complex Latin rhythms that would catapult her to stardom and, with Emilio’s guidance, make her one of the biggest-selling artists in the world.  Gloria has garnered seven Grammys and her husband has even outdone her with 19 of the coveted award statuettes. This true story of a love and musical collaboration is the foundation of On Your Feet!

The Production

Under the direction of two-time Tony Award winner Jerry Mitchell (Kinky Boots), the On Your Feet! sets (by David Rockwell) come to life and the cast is given plenty of room to shine. Actors even have a chance to spread out beyond singing and dancing, thanks to a thoughtful book by Academy Award winner (Birdman, The BodyguardMusical) Alexander Dinelaris.  Choreographer and Olivier Award winner Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys, Memphis) immersed himself in Cuban culture to be sure that every move his dancers make on stage rings an authentic bell, and he’s absolutely nailed it.  The detailed costumes range from the simple Cuban country clothes to Gloria’s later glitzy costumes, and all are beautifully designed and executed by Emilio Sosa, who was nominated for a Tony for his work in Porgy & Bess.

The Music

Produced in coordination with the Nederlander Organization and Estefan Enterprises, Inc., with orchestrations by Gloria and Emilio Estefan, On Your Feet! is a journey through the top of the musical charts and a display of the couple’s smash hits, including “Conga,” The Rhythm is Gonna Get You,” “1-2-3,” “Mi Tierra,” “Don’t Want to Lose You Now,” “Reach,” and, of course “Get On Your Feet.” To make certain you have the feel of the real music as you heard it first, the orchestra includes several members of Miami Sound Machine, the group behind Gloria as she rose to superstardom.

On Your Feet! definitely earns its exclamation point. It just might even need one more!
