Oslo Broadway Show – Review

Oslo is a well-reviewed political thriller created by J.T. Rogers and directed by Bartlett Sher. A dark comedy that focuses on a pivotal moment in the relationship between Israel and Palestine, Oslo is a tense but droll insight into political negotiations. With Tony Award winners Jefferson Mays and Jennifer Ehle heading up the cast, Oslo is a remarkable true story that comes to life onstage. The play certainly requires some attention from its audience, but that engagement is rewarded with great acting, strong production values, and a truly fascinating story.

The play opens as the stage is being set with Mona Juul, played by Ehle, breaking the fourth wall to give the audience some much-needed background information. Mona and her husband, Terje Rod-Larsen, were Norwegian diplomats who played a central role in the Oslo Accords. With their involvement, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat agreed to meet at the White House in 1993. This landmark meeting was a pivotal moment in the history of the Israel-Palestine conflict, and Oslo paints its genesis with fascinating depth. A large cast of international characters are introduced in Oslo but they are crafted with care and this three-hour production seems to fly by. There is a lot to learn but it is offered to the audience in a manageable and compelling format.

It is remarkable that Oslo manages to introduce humor into such a serious story, but it does so effectively. Moreover, the play does a wonderful job of showing the real humans behind seemingly distant political negotiations. The show is not for the faint-hearted but it is perfect for fans of thrilling, substantial theater.
