Significant Other Broadway – Review
Significant Other is a sweet and funny depiction of modern love and friendships. Anyone who has ever felt like their friends were pairing off and moving on without them will empathize with the main character, Jordan, as he struggles to get to grips with his friends’ romantic lives. The show was created by Dan Harmon, the force behind 2012’s riotously successful Bad Jews. He is back on fine form with Significant Other which is, yet again, a relatable and intelligent piece. The contemporary characters are painted lovingly and developed well throughout this endearing Broadway newcomer.
The main character, Jordan Berman, is a young gay man with a loving group of female friends. However, he’s becoming a little jealous as they all start to find love and settle down while he remains eternally single. There’s Kiki, the self-obsessed firebrand, Vanessa, who’s finally getting serious with her work colleague boyfriend, and Laura, who’s getting ready to plan her gigantic wedding. Propping up the cast with an adorable and droll edge is Jordan’s grandmother, Helene. Significant Other allows Jordan to be envious and lonely without becoming too self-pitying, and the story will ring true for anyone who feels perpetually uncoupled.
The struggle to be a supportive friend while feeling a little sorry for yourself is portrayed intelligently by Gideon Glick, who plays Jordan with aplomb. The observations on modern love and the challenge of finding a partner in an increasingly coupled-off world are intelligent and will ring true for many theater goers. Significant Other has been lavishly praised by critics and it provides audiences with a memorable and poignant theater experience while packing in some good laughs too.
